چکیده
ii Acknowledgments A lot of people contributed to this thesis in different ways. First, I would like to thank Prof. Matthias Fuchs for the opportunity to work under his supervision. I profitted enormously from his instructions and our discussions. He was always available when I needed help. I also thank him for being very exacting concerning my results, which forced me to optimize my arguments and helped me to separate helpful from meaningless ideas. I am grateful to Prof. Jörg Baschnagel, the second referee of the thesis, for various discussions. He made it possible for me to spend two inspiring months in his group at the Institut Charles Sadron in Strasbourg for which I thank him. I acknowledge financial support from the " Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft " in the International Research Training Group (IRTG) " Soft Condensed Matter ". The IRTG gave me the opportunity to participate in various seminars and workshops. I would also like to thank the " Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes " for its support and the possibility to participate in several seminars for doctoral students. I acknowledge the discussions with Dr. Joseph M. Brader on all kinds of topics as well as the competitions on the badminton court. It was simply good to hear his opinion about things. I also thank Dr. Thomas Voigtmann. For me, he is the " MCT-encyclopedia " on two legs and he immediately understands my points in our discussions. Special thanks go to all my colleagues in the group who enriched the daily life. Dr. Tho-mas Voigtmann, Dr. Joseph M. Brader and Christof Walz are acknowledged for a critical reading of the manuscript. I thank Fabian Weyßer for discussions within our beginning theory-simulation collaboration. I also acknowledge discussions with Prof. helped me find my way through the FDT-violation jungle. The members of the Baschnagel-group in Strasbourg made my stay there a great pleasure for which I thank especially the young generation. I also acknowledge the inspiring discussions with Dr. Joachim Wittmer. My parents, Dr. Ekkehard und Gisela Krüger, supported me in uncountable many ways for which I want to thank them. Final and special thanks go to Anja Ging for her support, especially during the last weeks. She is also acknowledged for a critical reading of the manuscript and comments from the literature-studies point of view.

Dense colloidal suspensions under time-dependent shear.
We consider the nonlinear rheology of dense colloidal suspensions under a time-dependent simple shear flow. Starting from the Smoluchowski equation for interacting Brownian particles advected by shearing (ignoring fluctuations in fluid velocity), we develop a formalism which enables the calculation of time-dependent, far-from-equilibrium averages. Taking shear stress as an example, we derive ex...
متن کاملFlow curves of colloidal dispersions close to the glass transition. Asymptotic scaling laws in a schematic model of mode coupling theory.
The flow curves, viz. the curves of stationary stress under steady shearing, are obtained close to the glass transition in dense colloidal dispersions using asymptotic expansions in the schematic F₁₂(γ)-model of mode coupling theory. The shear thinning of the viscosity in fluid states and the yielding of glassy states is discussed. At the transition between fluid and shear-molten glass, simple ...
متن کاملIntegration through transients for Brownian particles under steady shear
Starting from the microscopic Smoluchowski equation for interacting Brownian particles under stationary shearing, exact expressions for shear-dependent steady-state averages, correlation and structure functions, and susceptibilities are obtained, which take the form of generalized Green–Kubo relations. They require integration of transient dynamics. Equations of motion with memory effects for t...
متن کاملAging and memory effects in colloidal glasses
– We study the effect of shear on the aging dynamics of a colloidal suspension of synthetic clay particles. We find that a shear of amplitude γ reduces the relaxation time measured just after the cessation of shear by a factor exp(−γ/γc), with γc ∼ 5%. From this rejuvenation effect, we extract a quantitative strain/temperature correspondence between colloidal systems and molecular or spin glass...
متن کاملNonlinear Rheological Properties of Dense Colloidal Dispersions Close to a Glass Transition under Steady Shear
The nonlinear rheological properties of dense colloidal suspensions under steady shear are discussed within a first principles approach. It starts from the Smoluchowski equation of interacting Brownian particles in a given shear flow, derives generalized Green-Kubo relations, which contain the transients dynamics formally exactly, and closes the equations using mode coupling approximations. She...
متن کاملFluctuation dissipation relations in stationary states of interacting Brownian particles under shear.
The fluctuation dissipation theorem is studied close to the glass transition in colloidal suspensions under steady shear. Shear breaks detailed balance in the many-particle Smoluchowski equation and gives response functions in the stationary state which are smaller at long times than estimated from the equilibrium fluctuation dissipation theorem. During the final shear-driven decay, an asymptot...
